Chad Bell returns to the Detroit Tigers in place of Arcenio León

The relief pitching carousel for the Detroit Tigers continues. Today the team announced another move involving farm team affiliate the Toledo Mud Hens.

Arcenio León had been used mostly in middle relief for Detroit this year. León started off the month of June on a hot streak allowing only 1 hit, 0 earned runs, and 1 walk in 3.1 innings of work. However, in his last 2 games, León has slipped a little off that pace. In games against the Los Angeles Angels on June 8 and the Boston Red Sox on June 10, he gave up 6 hits, 9 earned runs, and 5 walks in only 2.1 innings. Even though he was rocked lately, León certainly has the potential for greatness. He has shown flashes this year already.

Chad Bell returns to the squad after some solid outings in May for the Tigers. Bell appeared in 5 games in May for a total of 10 innings. In that time he allowed 6 hits and 3 earned runs with 5 walks and 7 strikeouts.

León had been used as a closer in Toledo and his opportunity to pitch more than one inning on June 10 backfired. Bell has been a fairly reliable reliever this year for the Tigers. Here’s hoping that León regains his mojo down in Toledo. The Tigers will need him down the stretch.
