Chauncey Billups signs with Detroit Pistons

First the Detroit Pistons brought back Rasheed Wallace to be an assistant on head coach Mo Cheeks’ coaching staff, now Detroit Pistons GM Joe Dumars is bringing back another link to their 2004 NBA Championship squad.

Early Thursday morning, the Pistons announced that they had signed former NBA Finals MVP Chauncey Billups to a 2-year $5 million deal.

Billups averaged 8.4 points and shot 36.7 percent from deep in only 22 games last season for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Billups played for the Pistons from 2002-08 and on November 3, 2008 Dumars made that fateful move to trade Billups to the Denver Nuggets for fading star Allen Iverson. That was the beginning of the end for the Pistons franchise as the team struggled to even make the playoffs and Iverson was a distraction.

Now that Billups is back, he’s not what he used to be. Don’t expect him to come in here and just average 20 points and lead the team back to championship contention. He is 36 years old after all. He’ll be more of a veteran leader for this young team and teach these youngsters how to be professionals and how to play. Brandon Knight will be the beneficiary of his teachings as he will be going through “How to be a point guard 101”.

Billups also brings shooting to the roster. Billups can still knock down his fair share of 3’s and can spread the floor.

This also gives the Pistons six guards on the roster. I think this setting up a trade. A trade for Rajon Rondo? Still a possibility and they could finally get Rodney Stuckey off the roster. I think the writing is on the wall for Stuckey’s departure.

Could Detroit Pistons move up to No. 2 in 2022 NBA Draft?

Overall, I think it’s a good move for Joey D and it’ll be cool to see Billups back in a Pistons uniform. All I know is, Andre Drummond better give up that number 1 jersey and give it back to Billups.

  1. Good! At the very least, he can provide positive mentoring to the young players like Knight….help them mature and blossom.
