Tigers’ Historic Nine-Run Inning Fuels 12–2 Win, Paddack Earns First Career Save

The Detroit Tigers turned Yankee Stadium into their stage Tuesday night, exploding for a nine-run seventh inning that buried the New York Yankees 12–2. It was Detroit’s second nine-run inning of the season (the first came on May 12 against Boston), and the first time the club has accomplished the feat multiple times in a year since 2008.

A Seventh-Inning Avalanche

What began as a tight game broke wide open in the seventh when Detroit sent 14 batters to the plate. The Tigers piled up runs with a mix of timely hits, walks, and aggressive baserunning, overwhelming New York’s bullpen. The rally marked the team’s most explosive frame since their May breakout against Boston, further underscoring how dangerous their offense can be when locked in.

Chris Paddack’s Milestone Moment

While the bats stole headlines, the night belonged just as much to Chris Paddack, who earned his first career save in style. The right-hander tossed three scoreless innings, striking out four to lock down the victory.

What made it even more special was the journey leading up to it. Paddack has only been a Tiger for about a month and was returning from bereavement leave after a death in his family. He admitted that transitioning from starter to bullpen arm hasn’t been easy, but Tuesday offered redemption and celebration.

“I forgot what that feels like. I haven’t had a beer shower since 2019. It was good to get back in the basket and dance around with the boys. You never want to take those opportunities for granted. Usually that means something special happened, and I finally got my chance to close out a game.”

For a player who’s logged 145.1 innings with 102 strikeouts this season, the milestone carried extra meaning, both professionally and personally.

Why It Matters

  • Detroit became the first Tigers team since 2008 to tally multiple nine-run innings in a single season.
  • Paddack’s performance showed the bullpen has another weapon down the stretch.
  • The win reinforced Detroit’s ability to generate offense in bunches, a key ingredient as the postseason race heats up.

The Tigers will look to carry that same energy into tonight’s matchup as they continue their series in the Bronx.
