There’s been a renewed discussion social justice following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota in late May, and one of the most outspoken proponents of social justice reform in the sports world is now going into business with a major outlet.
ESPN Films (owned by The Walt Disney Company) has teamed up with Kaepernick’s production company, Ra Vision Media, to produce a series of scripted and unscripted stories involving race issues, social justice and police reform.
“During this unprecedented time, the Walt Disney Company remains committed to creating diverse and inclusive content that resonates and matters,” Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger said in a statement announcing the deal. “Colin’s experience gives him a unique perspective on the intersection of sports, culture and race, which will undoubtedly create compelling stories that will educate, enlighten and entertain, and we look forward to working with him on this important collaboration.”
Kaepernick became synonymous with social justice reform when, as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, knelt during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police brutality and social inequality. He’s yet to take an NFL snap since that season.
Outspoken Kaepernick defender and former ESPN employee Jemele Hill will be a producer for the project.
