David Perron badly wants to win for Dylan Larkin

Could a familiar faced free agent soon reunite with the Detroit Red Wings?

We are just hours away from the NHL free agency period and you can bet Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is excited to add some players to improve his current roster, without mortgaging the future.

Some have linked the Red Wings to players like Torey Krug and Jacob Markstrom but I think their price tags (and length of the contract they will want) will be more than Yzerman wants to pay.

That being said, while researching some potential options for the Red Wings, I came across a piece published by Tony Wolak of The Hockey Writers and he mentioned a possible reunion between the Red Wings and Andreas Athanasiou.

“Finally, another interesting scenario worth exploring is an Andreas Athanasiou reunion. The former Red Wing was not tendered a qualifying offer by Ken Holland and the Edmonton Oilers, making him a UFA. The ship may have sailed – there’s a good chance Athanasiou doesn’t want to return to Hockeytown. But if he’s open to finishing what he started, a one-year contract to prove his worth could benefit both parties.”

Wolak mentions “there’s a good chance Athanasiou doesn’t want to return to Hockeytown,” but in my opinion, there is even a better chance that Steve Yzerman does not want AA to return to Hockeytown.

Is it possible that we see a reunion between the Red Wings and Athanasiou? I guess it’s possible but I would be shocked to see him back in the Motor City.

What do you think?

Terry Foster blasts Detroit media for not taking Lions HC Matt Patricia to task

If you have been reading Detroit Sports Nation since Matt Patricia was hired by the Detroit Lions, you probably realize that pretty much every writer here wanted him fired by the time his first season was over. Though I joined the DSN team, I can promise you that I was in the same boat along with the rest of the staff!

We have constantly been calling for Lions’ ownership to fire both Patricia and GM Bob Quinn as they have proven their incompetence time and time again.

Yet, many in the Detroit media continue to sugarcoat everything rather than having a spine and giving a strong opinion one way or the other. This is not surprising because it is obvious they are scared of the repercussions of rocking the boat and possibly being shunned by the team they cover. (Note: there are a couple of local Lions blogs that are coming around and we welcome them to our bandwagon.)

On Friday, former Detroit sports writer and 97.1 The Ticket co-host Terry Foster posted an article on his blog in which he calls out the Detroit media for not taking Patricia to task.
