D3 Football: Mount Union sees 112-game winning streak snapped

Most college football fans know that the Alabama Crimson Tide is the current unquestioned superpower in Division I, at least at the FBS level. A peg down at the FCS level, the North Dakota State Bison are the class of the former D I-AA, having claimed five consecutive national titles.

Not many college football fans are aware of the powerhouse programs at the lower divisions. For those who know of D-III football, they would know that the Purple Raiders of Mount Union are second to none and it ain’t even close. So much so, they had won 112 straight regular season games… yes. One HUNDRED and 12 straight games.

Well… streak no more.

Want a little background on Mount Union? The defending D-III champion Purple Raiders in the last 23 seasons coming into this year had appeared in 19 national title games, winning 12 of them. Even more impressively, from 2005-14, they played fellow D-III powerhouse Wisconsin-Whitewater nine times in the championship game (WW won six of the nine meetings).

Going back to Mount Union though, prior to their 31-28 loss against John Carroll University on Saturday, they were an astounding 222-1 in their last 223 regular season games. The lone defeat in that stretch of countless winning came in late October of 2005, sandwiched in between two winning streaks of 110+ games.

The 112-game regular-season winning streak was not the only thing that vanished into thin air on Saturday for the Purple Raiders. The loss to JCU also snapped a streak of 98 straight wins at home, and being it the final game of the season with a regular season conference title on the line, the defeat snaps a streak of 24 straight crowns in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Despite the loss and only so many spots available for the 32-team field, it is very likely that the Purple Raiders will earn an at-large bid in the dance and vie for a D-III best 13th national title.
