The Detroit Lions didn’t just find a head coach when they hired Dan Campbell in 2021; according to ESPN, they found the best one in the entire league over the last half-decade.
In a new piece ranking every NFL head coaching hire from the 2021 offseason through 2025, ESPN senior analyst Bill Barnwell placed Campbell at the very top of the list. That’s out of 37 total hires across the league during that span.
And while Campbell’s win percentage doesn’t technically lead the pack, Barnwell made it clear that record alone doesn’t tell the full story.
Why Campbell’s Resume Stands Above the Rest
Barnwell acknowledged that Campbell’s .571 winning percentage ranks seventh among coaches with at least two seasons, but context is everything.
“It’s worth noting just how low the Lions were before Campbell arrived,” Barnwell wrote. “Detroit had gone 14-33-1 under Matt Patricia and interim coach Darrell Bevell. It hadn’t won a playoff game since 1991. One of the first things new general manager Brad Holmes did was trade Matthew Stafford to the Rams for two first-round picks and Jared Goff, who was essentially a salary dump from an organization that had completely lost faith in the 2016 first overall pick. The only significant player from the roster Campbell inherited who is still on the team in 2025 is offensive tackle Taylor Decker. This has been a complete rebuild in Detroit.”
In other words: Campbell didn’t inherit a contender. He inherited a teardown.
And he helped build it back from the studs.
The Aggression That Changed Detroit’s Identity
Barnwell also highlighted one of Campbell’s defining traits — his fearless, go-for-it mentality.
“Campbell’s aggressive decision-making on fourth down has been a huge plus, even if the Lions haven’t succeeded 100% of the time in those situations,” Barnwell wrote.
That mindset has become a core part of Detroit’s identity: trust your players, trust your preparation, and don’t coach scared. It’s a philosophy that has directly swung close games and helped reshape how opponents view the Lions.
The Long-Term Franchise Face
The most powerful part of Barnwell’s argument came in the form of a simple question:
If you had to bet on one coach from the last five hiring cycles still being with his team 15 years from now, who would it be?
“My choice would be Campbell, who has become the face of the franchise in Detroit.”
That line says everything.
In a league defined by turnover, impatience, and short leashes, Campbell has become more than just a play-caller or culture builder. He’s the emotional and philosophical core of the organization — the rare coach whose presence defines the team as much as any star player.
From biting kneecaps to winning playoff games, from a roster teardown to a contender, the Lions didn’t just make a good hire.
