Sunday’s loss wasn’t just painful, it was exhausting.
After the Detroit Lions fell 29–24 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a game that ended with confusion and controversy, head coach Dan Campbell struck a tone that mixed frustration with accountability.
The ending will dominate headlines, but Campbell made it clear he wasn’t interested in hiding behind officiating.
“We Didn’t Make Enough Plays”
Campbell didn’t sugarcoat the result, calling the loss “frustrating,” while also emphasizing how hard his team continued to fight despite the odds.
“We weren’t able to close it out. And at the end of the day, that’s on us. We did that,” Campbell said. “We’re the ones who put ourselves in that position to where we had to try to score on the last play. Some of the efforts were outstanding, and it was just too little, too late. We just didn’t make enough plays.”
It was a familiar message from Campbell, praise the effort, own the mistakes, and refuse to shift blame externally.
Campbell on the Controversial Final Play
When asked directly about the late offensive pass interference penalty that wiped out what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown, Campbell was noticeably restrained.
“I mean, I don’t even want to get into it, you know, because it’s not going to change anything. We still lost,” Campbell said. “I mean, look, you think you score, you don’t score. And then, you think you’re going to have another play, replay it or back it up one more shot and it doesn’t.”
Campbell acknowledged the frustration of learning the game would end without another snap, but stopped short of criticizing officials.
“I guess that’s the way it’s written in the rule book, so that’s frustrating. But there again, it shouldn’t ever come to that. We had our opportunities. We weren’t able to put it in before that play.”
Accountability Over Excuses
While fans and players alike debated the call, Campbell consistently brought the conversation back to execution earlier in the game. His message was clear: if the Lions had finished drives, stopped the run, or made one more play earlier, the final snap never would’ve mattered.
That mindset has defined Campbell’s tenure, and it showed again in defeat.

But Dan Campbell wasn’t interested in moral victories or officiating debates. His focus remained squarely on missed chances, late execution, and responsibility, even on a night when it would’ve been easy to point elsewhere.
