Dan Campbell doesn’t just chew kneecaps; he chews on his own mistakes. And after the Detroit Lions’ crushing postseason exit in 2024, the head coach is looking in the mirror.

In a candid chat with WXYZ’s Brad Galli, Campbell admitted he might have unintentionally set his team up for a mental letdown last season. The issue? A laser focus on securing the NFC’s No. 1 seed.
“One of the things, when I look back (to last year), I think the emphasis needs to stay on winning the division and playing a hell of a lot better Week 17 than you do in Week 1,” Campbell said as quoted by Pride of Detroit. “If we’ll just focus on that… we’ll be battle-tested and ready to go.”
The Wrong Target?
Campbell’s thinking is simple in hindsight, the Lions may have hit their regular-season goal so hard that they let out a sigh of relief… right before the playoffs.
“There was a little part of me last year, I’m like, Man, did I put such an emphasis on the one-seed… that it was almost like — [sigh] — we took a deep breath,” Campbell admitted. “And then it was like, ‘Oh man, we reached one of those goals,’ but the ultimate goal is the Super Bowl.”
And while injuries, especially on defense, played a massive role in the Divisional Round loss to Washington, Campbell still wonders if the team’s mindset could have been sharper.
“So I just, in my own head, did I set us up for failure by the way that I spoke about it?” Campbell said. “Whereas, you know what? We didn’t lose on the road last year. What if we had gone on the road?”
A New 2025 Playbook (For the Mind)
This year, the message has shifted. Forget “all roads lead through Detroit.” The 2025 Lions are embracing wherever, whenever, whatever it takes.
“We’ll play at home, we’ll play on the road, we’ll play in the elements, we’ll play in the grass, turf. It doesn’t matter, the wind,” Campbell said. “Every game is different. You find a way to win.”
If Campbell’s new approach sticks, the Lions won’t just be aiming for home-field advantage, they’ll be built to win in Lambeau snow, Philly rain, or Santa Clara sunshine.
The Bottom Line
Dan Campbell’s self-awareness might be the Lions’ biggest offseason win. The 2024 squad proved they can dominate the regular season. Now, it’s about peaking at the right time and staying hungry for the only trophy that matters.
Because this year? They’ll take the No. 1 seed if it comes… but they’ll take a Lombardi over it every single time.
