Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made it clear during Thursday’s press conference that while the team’s philosophy hasn’t changed since he arrived, the approach to roster construction continues to evolve with the times.
“When we first got here… we were in such a different position back then,” Campbell said. “Any changes that were made were because of where we’re at now roster-wise. I wouldn’t say philosophy [has] changed.”
Instead, Campbell stressed the increasing importance of depth across the roster and the practice squad, noting that success in today’s NFL demands contributions from far more than just the starting 22.
“Every year I feel like there’s more and more importance on the fact that you’re going to need every player on the roster and the practice squad. That vet squad is going to be very important.”

Campbell acknowledged the delicate decisions involved in final roster cuts, particularly when weighing whether a talented player can be “squeaked through” to the practice squad without another team claiming him.
“It’s just about trying to keep all the good players that you know you’re going to need…That’ll always be true. I think every year that’s become more and more significant.”
