Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is well aware of the ‘Same Ol’ Lions’ tag that has followed the team since most fans can remember.
During his memorable introductory press conference in January of 2021, Cambell promised that moving forward, the Lions were going to take on the identity of the city of Detroit and that eventually, they would be the “last one standing.”
“This place has been kicked,” he said. “It’s been battered. It’s been bruised. And I could sit up here and give you coachspeak all day long. I can give you, ‘Hey, we’re going to win this weekend.’ None of that matters, and you guys don’t want to hear it anyway. You heard enough of that (expletive), excuse my language.
“Here’s what I do know. This team is going to take on the identity of this city and this city has been down and it found a way to get up. It’s found a way to overcome adversity, right? So this team is going to be built on, we’re going to kick you in the teeth, right? And when you punch us back, we’re going to smile at you. And when you knock us down, we’re going to get up and on the way up, we’re going to bite a kneecap off. All right? And we’re going to stand up and it’s going to take two more shots to knock us down. And on the way up, we’re going to take your other kneecap and we’re going to get up and it’s going to take three shots to get us down. And when we do, we’re going to take another hunk out of you.
Dan Campbell is motivated to shed ‘Same Ol’ Lions’ tag
The Detroit Lions went 3-13-1 during Dan Campbell’s first season as their head coach and some of the haters were quick to label the team as the ‘Same Ol’ Lions’.
On Thursday, Campbell spoke to reporters prior to practice, and here is what he had to say about the ‘Same Ol’ Lions’ tag that has followed the franchise for so long.
“I knew that when I signed here, as a player,” Campbell said about the ‘Same Ol’ Lions tag. “And for me, it was one of the reasons I wanted to sign here. Because man, who doesn’t want to come here and change that? To be part of the team that turns things around? Like, I think that’s a motivating factor.”
