On Tuesday, news broke that the Detroit Lions had waived long snapper Don Muhlbach, who was the longest-tenured player on the team.
It had to be hard for Muhlbach to get the news that he was no longer a Lion but what made matters even worse is that he found out on his 40th birthday.
On Thursday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to the media and he put himself on blast for cutting Muhlbach on his birthday.
“There’s no way to sugarcoat that,” Campbell told reporters. “I’m an asshole, so that’s about the best way to put it.”
“There was a number of moves like with Nick that was coming down the wire, to get him back from COVID reserve and the linebacker and then the quarterback because of where we were at there and it just, once again, it’s putting a strain,” Campbell continued. “You’re looking for that spot and unfortunately it has to be on his birthday and it stinks.”
