Dan Cleary re-signs with Griffins, Red Wings re-sign RFA Ryan Sproul

The gift that just keeps on giving: Dan Cleary. After playing last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team has re-signed him to a one year contract today. Financial terms of the contract have not been released.

In his first season with the Griffins in 2015-16, the gift of Cleary played in 35 games while scoring three goals and chipping in 12 assists. He went scoreless in nine playoff games. Over the course of his 10 years in Detroit, Cleary racked up 124 goals and 151 assists in 609 games, including a career high 26 goals during the 2010-11 season.

Cleary also has the opportunity to join them at training camp on a tryout, but will likely end up serving as a depth option in camp while other players are wrapping up their time at the World Cup of Hockey.

In other news, the Red Wings signed their last remaining restricted free agent today by signing young defenseman Ryan Sproul to a two year contract. The first year of the deal has a two-way option worth $600,000, and the second year is one-way worth $650,000.

Sproul has appeared in one NHL game to this point in his career with the Red Wings (2014 regular season finale). He has played the last three years with the Griffins, appearing in 213 games while scoring 28 goals and adding 63 assists. At this point, Sproul ranks eighth (at the highest) on Detroit’s defensive depth chart. With the Red Wings likely carrying seven defensemen on the roster in the upcoming season, it appears that he would have to beat out fellow youngster Xavier Ouellet for a roster spot with the Red Wings. If he is unable to do so, he will start the year with Grand Rapids.

Sproul was the 55th of the 2011 draft for the Red Wings, and boasts a booming right handed shot from the back end.
