The Detroit Lions decided to delay today’s practice without explanation earlier today, and now we know the reason why.
The team canceled practice in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Wisconsin, sparking another wave of protests and demonstrations. After several hours’ delay, the team later announced they wouldn’t be practicing, saying football wasn’t important today.
“I didn’t really feel right about going into practice and running some football drill without talking to my team,” head coach Matt Patricia said.
Former Lions quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky praised the Lions for their actions today, saying that it shows that the players care for one another:
“I think this is a perfect example of those players really caring about each other, even though they may not experience it the same way,” he said. “They’re not going to be numb to this anymore. You can say “we will do something’ and then the opportunity presents itself to do something, and you don’t. I played for the Lions for seven years – I’ve never been more proud to be a small part of the Lions organization than I am today, so kudos to everyone there.”
