One of Major League Baseball’s most historic franchises, the Detroit Tigers have certainly made their mark on America’s national past time.
July 16 is a key date in team history, as it marks the anniversary of the team as well as Briggs Stadium being sold for a then-record $5.5 million in 1956.

Radio executives John Fetzer and Fred Knorr buy the Tigers and Briggs Stadium for a record $5.5 million from a reluctant Walter Briggs, Jr., who was ordered by family estate administrators to sell the ownership that he inherited from his father. The deal includes an agreement to retain Briggs, who will become the team’s general manager, as executive vice president, but the former owner will resign from both posts at the start of next season.
The venue was the home of the Tigers from 1912 to 1999, and demolishment began in 2008.
