On this date: Nicklas Lidstrom’s #5 raised to Joe Louis Arena rafters

The Perfect Human's jersey number was officially raised to the rafters on this date in 2014.

He was known as “The Perfect Human”, and one look at his career accolades will certify that nickname.

In 20 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom won four Stanley Cup championships, seven Norris Memorial Trophies (awarded to the NHL's top defenceman), one Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP (2002), and was voted into 12 NHL All-Star Games.

Oh, and the Red Wings never missed the playoffs during his career.

He retired from the NHL in 2012, and nobody has worn his jersey #5 since. On this date in 2014, his number was officially retired and raised to the rafters at Joe Louis Arena in a pre-game ceremony.
