The 2021 NFL Mock Draft has been flowing like honey for, well, the moment the 2020 NFL Draft ended.
Everybody and their brother (or sister) has already published multiple mock drafts but that is not the case for Detroit Free Press writer Dave Birkett, who put out his 2021 Mock Draft version 1.0 on Thursday.
Personally, I have been waiting patiently for Birkett’s opinion because I just so happen to believe that he (along with Erik Schlitt of Lions Wire) is the best in the business when it comes to anything Lions-related.
When I got to the No. 7 pick in Birkett’s Mock Draft, I saw that pick and immediately thought it would be one that some Lions fans would love and others would hate.
With the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Birkett has the Lions selecting QB Trey Lance out of North Dakota State.
Here is what Birkett has to say about this pick.
Don’t think for a second the Lions are out of the quarterback market because they acquired Jared Goff. The extra draft capital they have is nice, but it won’t mean a thing if they don’t get the quarterback position right. Lance has the tools to be a star. He’s not ready to play yet, and in Detroit, he can sit a season and take over in 2022.
According to Birkett, when the Lions are on the clock, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Justin Fields will all be off the board, leaving Lance as the next best QB available (personally, I have him as my No. 3 at the moment behind Lawrence and Wilson).
Nation, would you like to see the Lions select Trey Lance with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?
