15 years. That’s how long it’s been since legendary coach Scotty Bowman retired from coaching in the NHL. He went out a winner that year, with the Detroit Red Wings taking home the Stanley Cup by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1, good for his 9th career championship, three of which were with Detroit (1997-98, 2002).

But two season prior, Bowman hit a milestone that no other coach in the NHL has.

November 24, 2000: a home game against the Vancouver Canucks. Detroit superstar Sergei Fedorov scores two in the game to lift the Red Wings 3-2 over the Canucks, and give Bowman a win for his 2000th coached game.

If ever there were a fairly safe bet to make, it’s that there probably won’t be a coach to break Scotty Bowman’s record of 2,141 NHL regular season games coached, with 1,244 of those being victories. Thanks for the memories, Scotty!
