On Saturday, Michigan State fell to Arizona State 10-7 in front of a ruckus crowd at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.
The Spartans had a shot to send the game to overtime but junior kicker Matt Coghlin badly missed a 47-yard field goal wide left. It was Coghlin’s third miss of the day on three attempts but according to former NFL vice president of officiating and current Fox Sports rules analyst Dean Blandino, a 15-yard penalty should have been called on ASU for a defender leaping over the Spartans’ offensive line on the kick.
“That’s a foul for leaping,” Blandino said. “You have to be stationary on the line to jump over that plane over your opponent. That’s a 15-yard penalty and they get another shot if that flag is thrown. … It’s not a reviewable play. That’s one they just missed on the field.”
Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer agreed with Blandino that Coghlin should have gotten another try.
“That’s a clear call you have to see on the field,” Meyer said.
After watching the replay, there Ian no question about it that the penalty for leaping should have been called.
