Dear Bob Quinn,
Since taking over as general manager of OUR Detroit Lions, you have done a promising job. You brought in players like Marvin Jones and Anquan Boldin via free agency to help fill the shoes of a departed Calvin Johnson and your first draft class, based off early returns, looks like a winner.
But this offseason will be the most important you will ever have as a general manager and I am not referring to free agency or the 2017 NFL Draft. Both of those aspects of the offseason are ultra important to the future of the Detroit Lions franchise, but neither hold a candle to the most important decision you will be faced with. That decision is whether or not to make OUR quarterback, Matthew Stafford, the highest paid player in the history of the National Football League. Actually, let’s cut to the chase. Mr. Quinn, you MUST do whatever it takes to keep Matthew Stafford in Detroit, even if it means breaking the bank.
Have you been watching the NFL Playoffs since your team was eliminated, Mr. Quinn? Of course, you have! So, you have probably noticed the common theme amongst the four remaining teams. Each of them has a great quarterback running the show. You see, in order to challenge for a Super Bowl year in and year out, which is what we want as fans, OUR team MUST have a great quarterback. OUR team MUST have Matthew Stafford behind center.
Not only has Stafford shown improvement over the past couple of seasons, but he has emerged as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He is arguably one of the top 5 quarterbacks in the world and allowing him to leave the Motor City would be very SOL-esque. That, Mr. Quinn, would be unacceptable to Lions fans across the state of Michigan. Instead, you need to work your magic to make sure he is in Detroit for a long, long time.
Now, as you know by now Mr. Quinn, there are STILL some Matthew Stafford haters who love to come out of their holes every now and then to throw mud at the talented young quarterback. My advice to you on this is to IGNORE THE MORONS! I have to admit, years ago, I too doubted Stafford had what it takes to lead the Lions to the promised land, but I have come around. He’s improved his accuracy, his leadership cannot be questioned, and he’s proven he is part of the solution, rather than part of the problem in Detroit. Just sit back and close your eyes for a moment. Now imagine this Lions team without Matthew Stafford taking snaps. Imagine if we had to draft a quarterback and start over again. Mr. Quinn, you know as well as I do that there is a much better chance of drafting the next Joey Harrington as there is drafting the next Tom Brady.
Mr. Quinn, I believe you when you say you will do whatever it takes to build a winning franchise in Detroit, but in order to make that happen, you MUST have a cornerstone like Matthew Stafford to build around. You MUST make the no-brainer decision rather than falling into the Same Old Lions trap like so many have before you. On behalf of true Detroit Lions fans everywhere, I ask you to make it your number one priority this offseason to extend Matthew Stafford’s contract, even if it means making him the highest paid player in NFL history.
It’s our only hope.
Sincerely,
Detroit Lions Nation
