Derek Lalonde laments the late penalties that cost the Detroit Red Wings a chance at two points

The Detroit Red Wings‘ five-game winning streak came to an end last night at Little Caesars Arena when they faced the visiting Seattle Kraken. Seattle managed to erase their lead, forcing a tie in the late stages of the game, and ultimately securing a victory in overtime. Notably, it was a penalty called against Dylan Larkin that provided Seattle with the opportunity to equalize late in regulation, which they capitalized on before securing the win in the extra session. Head coach Derek Lalonde expressed his frustration, believing that the Red Wings would have earned the two points if not for those unfortunate infractions.

Lalonde praised the comeback, but didn't like the penalties

The Red Wings found themselves trailing 3-1 entering the third period, only to storm back in front thanks to goals from Shayne Gostisbehere, Larkin and Alex DeBrincat. However, Larkin was whistled late in regulation, setting up the chance for Seattle's Jared McCann to knot things up with 1:22 left. Jordan Eberle would strike for Seattle in the dying seconds of overtime, giving them the extra point.

He believes Detroit would have secured two points otherwise

In Lalonde's mind, Detroit would have won had it not been for their penalties.

“To be down two goals into the third and get a point out of this, we'll take that,” Lalonde said. “Give the guys a little credit, we had some adversity there at the end of the second. It's unfortunate we couldn't close it out. Took six penalties, they were all penalties. We took two in the last four minutes and that didn't give us a chance. I'm fully convinced we would have won that game without our penalties late.”

In regard to the performance of goaltender Ville Husso, Lalonde acknowledges that there were at least two shots from the Kraken that the Finnish goaltender wishes he could have back.

“It was just tough, a lot of volume (of shots), there were a couple of goals he definitely wants back,” Lalonde said. “It was probably similar to his first couple of starts. Not awful, he had some big saves, but the previous four games we played there were no soft goals in there. There were a couple he'd want back.”

TL;DR (too long didn't read)

  1. The Detroit Red Wings saw their five-game winning streak snapped by the visiting Seattle Kraken last night, who won 5-4 in overtime
  2. Head coach Derek Lalonde laments the penalties that would cost the Red Wings the chance at the extra point
  3. Lalonde also noted that goaltender Ville Husso would like a few of the goals he allowed back

Bottom Line: Onward and upward

The good news from last night's game despite the loss was that the power play unit remained red-hot with a trio of power play goals. Detroit will have to be sure to be more disciplined in their next game if they intend on starting a new winning streak.
