Despite addition of Marvin Jones, mock drafts still have Lions taking a receiver in first round

Although the Lions moved quickly to fill the gaping hole left by the retirement of Calvin Johnson, many still feel that the team needs to do more to solidify the wide receiver position. Wide receiver Marvin Jones was brought in on a five-year deal, and figures to have a prominent role in Detroit. But, replacing Johnson is not something that any one person can do.

Jones is expected to split the featured-receiver role with Golden Tate, who finished last season with 90 catches for 813 yards and six touchdowns. Jones hauled in 65 passes for 816 yards (both career highs) and four touchdowns during his last season with the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the NFL draft coming in less than a month, mock drafts are running rampant across the internet. The latest round of mocks have shown the Lions trending towards wide receiver Laquon Treadwell out of Ole Miss. ESPN’s Mel Kiper had this (ESPN Insider) to say of the Lions pick at #16:

“The Lions have needs elsewhere, but getting the top wide receiver in the draft class at No. 16 overall is a good value. It’s absurd to say Treadwell can replace Calvin Johnson — nobody is doing that — but he does give them length, strong hands and playmaking ability. They can get a good D-lineman in either of the next two rounds thanks to so much depth at the position.”

Treadwell’s junior season in at Ole Miss was monstrous. He finished with 82 catches for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns, while also completing three passes, one for a touchdown. He led the SEC in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, yards from scrimmage, and is seventh on the SEC’s career receptions list with 202.

What do you think, Nation? Is WR the way to go in the first round, or should the Lions be looking elsewhere?
