According to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun, the upcoming 2020-21 NHL Season could see the Detroit Red Wings land in a temporary division that features their former Central Division opponent Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators.
In years past, the Blackhawks and Predators were among Detroit’s chief rivalries. Of course, their nemesis Tampa Bay Lightning would also be there as well.
But while we’re waiting for an official start date of the upcoming season, one writer with the Detroit Free Press decided to have a little fun experimenting with some interesting new divisional realignments.
Ryan Ford put together four new divisions for Detroit for the upcoming season, with some rather appropriate names. Take a look below at the suggestions:
Original 8 Division: Boston, Chicago, Detroit, N.Y Rangers, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis.
Champs Division: Boston (6), Chicago (6), Detroit (11), N.J. Devils (3), N.Y. Islanders (4), N.Y. Rangers (4), Pittsburgh (5), Tampa Bay (2)
Middleweight Division (based on total history point percentage): Buffalo (.533), Colorado (.524), Dallas (.516), Detroit (.533), Pittsburgh (.518), N.Y. Islanders (.512), N.Y. Rangers (.513), Washington (.530).
Eight Is Enough Division (based on total points in March 2020): Arizona (3), Buffalo (2), Dallas (1), Detroit (4), N.Y. Islanders (2), N.Y. Rangers (5), San Jose (3), Tampa Bay (5).
I’d certainly be partial to the first suggestion of the “Original 8 Division” that feature more Original Six matchups with the likes of the Bruins, Blackhawks, and Rangers. And of course, fans always look forward to getting together with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Which of the four proposed divisions from the Detroit Free Press would you like to see most?
