Before the 2021 NFL season, the Detroit Lions sent a draft pick to the Denver Broncos in exchange for wide receiver Trinity Benson. At the time, the Lions needed wide receivers in a big way, and they hoped Benson would develop into a solid contributor. But during the 2021 season, Benson played in just eight games for the Lions, catching ten passes for 103 yards and zero touchdowns. Now, according to reports, the Lions are bringing Benson back.
How did the Detroit Lions acquire Trinity Benson?
According to a report from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are signing Benson off the Denver Broncos practice squad.
In August, the Lions decided it was time to move on from Benson, and he was waived. Benson remained a free agent until he was signed to the Denver Broncos practice squad on October 11.
So far this season, Benson has not played for the Broncos.
Antwaan Randle El praised Trinity Benson back in February
During Senior Bowl week back in February, Lions wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El has nothing but good things to say about Benson.
He is still piquing my interest,” Randle El said at the Senior Bowl back in February. “You see the speed, you see the route-running, you see the catching ability, especially balls on the sideline, the deep outs and stuff like that, and he threatens you. If you’re playing defense against him, he threatens you, in terms of the DB getting out of your backpedal and stuff like that. We see those things.”
The Lions still think Benson could help them at some point this season. It will be interesting to see how long he sticks around.
