For weeks, Detroit Lions fans had been watching one sneaky storyline unfold in the background of the season, whether the team would land a compensatory draft pick tied to cornerback D.J. Reed.
Well… that ship has probably sailed.
As noted by A to Z Sports, because Reed has now crossed the snap-count threshold for compensatory pick eligibility, the Lions are no longer projected to receive the fourth-round compensatory pick that had been hovering as a possibility earlier in the year. Instead, the compensatory formula now treats Reed as a full replacement for Carlton Davis, meaning the transaction cancels out.
The twist? Detroit may still be getting help elsewhere.
Why the Reed pick disappeared
Here’s the quick version.
- Carlton Davis left Detroit as a free agent → he counts as a loss
- The Lions signed D.J. Reed → he counts as a replacement
- BUT… if the replacement plays too few snaps, the league treats it as a net loss anyway
Earlier in the season, Reed’s injury had him sitting below the required snap threshold, which kept hope alive. But after returning to the lineup and finishing strong, Reed now sits at 52.4% of snaps, officially enough to cancel the pick.
So yeah, no bonus draft capital from that move.
The good news: a compensatory pick is still coming 💡
Even though the Reed pick is likely gone, the Lions are now projected to receive a fifth-round compensatory pick instead, this one tied to veteran guard Kevin Zeitler.
Detroit never signed a compensatory-eligible free agent to replace him, and Zeitler finished the year healthy with a full workload. That makes him a clean outgoing CFA loss, which the formula rewards.
It’s not a fourth-rounder… but extra Day-3 draft ammo is still big for Brad Holmes and this front office, especially with Detroit’s track record of developing depth players.

Like every compensatory-pick projection:
Nothing is official until the NFL releases the list in March.
But as of now, the Lions appear to be:
- Out on the Reed pick
- In line for a pick tied to Zeitler
