There’s a little buzz building in Allen Park, and it’s not hard to see why.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is reportedly set to interview with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday for their vacant offensive coordinator position, giving Lions fans real reason to dream about a blockbuster hire.
McDaniel’s name has been everywhere this week. He already sat down with the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching opening and is also scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Baltimore Ravens for head coaching jobs as well. In other words, he’s one of the hottest coaching candidates on the market.
But Detroit still gets its shot.
For Lions fans, the idea of pairing one of the NFL’s most creative offensive minds with a roster loaded with weapons is hard not to get excited about. McDaniel, 42, is widely respected for his innovative scheme, ability to maximize speed and space, and his work with quarterbacks. Just two seasons ago, he helped engineer the league’s No. 1 total offense and No. 2 scoring offense with the Dolphins.
That résumé is exactly why this interview matters.
Yes, the Lions are technically competing with head coaching opportunities, and if McDaniel is offered one of those jobs, it would be tough to turn down. But the fact that Detroit is getting a formal interview suggests mutual interest, and that alone is enough to get the fan base buzzing.
If everything breaks right, Tuesday could be a pivotal day for the Lions’ offense.
Landing McDaniel as offensive coordinator would be a massive win, injecting elite play-calling, creativity, and experience into a unit already built to score. It may be a long shot given the competition, but for now, hope is alive in Detroit that a major upgrade could be coming sooner rather than later.
