Detroit Lions DE Everson Griffen discusses his inspiration and his plans to get rough with ex-teammate

The Detroit Lions acquired defensive end Everson Griffen from the Dallas Cowboys earlier this season, and so far the move has paid dividends.

However, Griffen had spent the bulk of his career with the divisional opponent Minnesota Vikings. He'll have the chance to go up against a former teammate of his from Minnesota this weekend when Detroit faces the Carolina Panthers.

Former Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is now under center for the Panthers, and Griffen has him in his sights:

Griffen has already tied a Lions team record for most quarterback hits in a single game with five. How many times is he going to lay the body on his former teammate?

Of course, for a seasoned vet like Griffen, it takes plenty of motivation to continuously put in the work needed to stay atop of one's chosen craft. And the source of Griffen's inspiration is certainly touching.

“I have to say, my mom,” Griffen explained during Lions media availability today. “Seeing my mom grind growing up – she was a single mom, and seeing her putting the hard work in and being able to support my family and me and my brother. I just dig deep. And, I just love this game of football.”

Griffen's mother, Sabrina Scott, passed away unexpectedly in 2012 due to spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) at the age of 52.
