Detroit Lions fans didn’t just grade Dan Campbell’s 2025 season, they delivered a reality check.

According to a recent SB Nation poll, the most common grade handed to Campbell was a C, selected by 52% of voters. The result reflects a fan base processing a jarring reversal: Detroit fell from an elite 15–2 record in 2024 to 9–8 in 2025, missing the playoffs entirely after being viewed as a Super Bowl contender just one year earlier.

Only 18% of fans awarded an A or B, while 30% landed on D or F. But the overwhelming “C” tells the story best. This wasn’t a collapse that destroyed belief in Campbell, but it was a season that clearly fell short of expectations.

After going 15–2 and finishing as one of the NFL’s most dominant teams in 2024, the Lions entered 2025 with Super Bowl aspirations. Instead, inconsistency, injuries, and late-game failures led to a 9–8 finish and an early offseason. For a team that had been measuring itself against the league’s elite, simply being “above .500” no longer felt good enough.

That context explains the grading. Fans didn’t revolt. They didn’t abandon the coach. But they did hold him to a higher standard, the standard created by last season’s historic run.

Campbell’s culture, leadership, and toughness still resonate in Detroit. But after watching a roster built to contend fall out of the playoff picture, many fans viewed 2025 as a missed opportunity rather than a success. The “C” grade reflects belief mixed with frustration, patience mixed with urgency.
