The Detroit Lions now have some extra cap space with which to work thanks to some creative bookkeeping.
They’ve converted $1.335 million of OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai’s remaining base salary into a signing bonus, opening up $1 million worth of cap space for GM Brad Holmes to work with for there remainder of the 2021 season.
The Lions, who were airtight to the cap, converted $1.335M of OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai remaining base salary into a singing bonus, creating $1M in space for the rest of this season.

Vaitai has started in 14 of Detroit’s 15 games this season after being limited to just ten last year. He had originally been signed to a five year, $50 million deal by former GM Bob Quinn in March of 2020.
