Detroit Lions HC Matt Patricia comments on being retained for 2020

Despite failing miserably in terms of wins and losses and despite leading a defense that is ranked near the bottom of the NFL, Matt Patricia has been officially notified that he will continue to coach the Detroit Lions in 2020.

That news broke on Tuesday after Lions owner Martha Ford, along with team president Rod Wood and Ford’s daughter, Sheila Ford Hamp met with a select group of beat writers for an extended period of time.

Later in the day, Patricia met with the media and he shared his gratitude to the Lions for retaining him.

“Well I mean, obviously it means the world to me,” Patricia responded when asked about his return announcement. “I appreciate Mrs. Ford and her family so much, and Rod (Wood), and Bob (Quinn), and everything that we’re trying to do here, and what we’re trying to accomplish and where we’re trying to lead this organization.”

“It’s certainly – I think we’ve talked about it before, it’s a process that we’re trying to go through to get the team to a highly competitive level that can sustain, and be consistent, and handle the ebbs and flows of an NFL season, and injuries and the rest of it,” the head coach stated. “It’s something that we’re trying to lay a foundation for. I think we’ve seen some strides that we’ve made with the team this year, but we obviously need to build and improve upon that going forward. Certainly, to have the conversations that I have with Mrs. Ford and her family, and how appreciative I am of the opportunity they have given to me and to my family to be able to do something that (I) can follow through on a vision of what we’re trying to do here is so important. I’m very appreciative on my end.”

Nation, do you think this move will end up working out or will this be yet another bad move by the Lions ownership?
