Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia replaces himself

When the Detroit Lions hired Matt Patricia to be their next head coach, the thought was that he would transform the defense into one of the best in the NFL.

Unfortunately, despite Patricia calling the defense during his first two seasons as head coach, the Lions have not been able to stop opposing offenses, and unless that improves in 2020, the team will continue to lose.

During the offseason, the Lions hired Cory Undlin to become their next defensive coordinator but whether or not he would actually call the defense has been a question neither he nor Patricia has been willing to answer.

Until now.

On Sunday, Undlin spoke to the media via a Zoom conference call and he revealed that he would be the one calling the Lions defense in 2020.

From Detroit Free Press:

New Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin said Sunday he plans to be on the sideline during games this season where he'll be “calling the defense.”

Undlin, who has previously declined to say what role he'll have in play calling, dropped the nugget during a video conference when asked if he'll be on the sideline or in the booth this season.

“I’ve got plenty of eyes up top and just personally I like – personally, there is a feel of being on the field and then anytime for me when you’ve got to go through another conduit to get it out there, it’s just it’s more efficient for me,” Undlin said. “And if you guys haven’t got to know me, there’s an element of being in front of (players) and looking at them when you’re coaching them and that would be my preference, and Matt completely agrees with that.”

Nation, we now know who will be calling the Lions defense in 2020, do you think it is the right decision by Matt Patricia?
