The big question regarding the Detroit Lions right now is, when will rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams make his NFL debut? Head coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that it would take a lot for Williams to suit up this coming Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that anything was possible. On Thursday, Williams spoke to reporters, and he gave a bit of an update on his own availability.
What did Jameson Williams say about when he will play?
Williams told MLive that he is close to returning and that he is feeling good.
“Somewhere close to it,” the Detroit Lions’ prized rookie told MLive after practice on Thursday. “I’m running real fast right now. I feel real fast. Feeling good.”
If you have browsed Twitter over the past couple of days, you have probably come across some of the videos of Williams running, and to say he looks fast would be an understatement.
Need proof? Here ya go. Don’t blink or you will miss it.
According to Kyle Meinke of MLive, Williams dropped a few passes while warming up prior to the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Bills, and he dropped a couple more during individual drills on Thursday. Despite that, he insists he is not rusty.
“I wouldn’t say I feel rusty,” Williams said. “I’m getting back on my feet. I’ve been running around for a minute now, so it’s just I’m back out with the team. I wouldn’t say I feel rusty.”
Jameson Williams’ teammates rave about his speed
Williams’ teammates, who are some of the best athletes on the planet, have been blown away by his elite speed and acceleration.
Jared Goff
“Brandin Cooks is probably the fastest guy I’ve played with, but it’s a different type of speed (with Williams),” quarterback Jared Goff said. “He’s longer. He’s a stride guy. He’s got length, he’s got wingspan. Brandin was more just kind of a burner, and he’s done that well for a long time. But Jameson can extend on guys, he can really make catches away from his body, that type of stuff.
“How much he’ll be able to help us in the final six games, we’ll see. But certainly as a quarterback, want him on the field as soon as possible.”
DJ Chark
“The excitement that you guys feel and we feel is for real,” fellow wideout DJ Chark said. “I definitely believe that he’s a superstar.”
“Same thing you guys seen,” Chark said. “He’s fast.”
Will Jameson Williams make his debut with the Detroit Lions on Sunday against the Jaguars? That seems unlikely, but, I have to believe he will be ready to suit up next week.
