In a recent 2024 NFL re-draft conducted by ESPN, the Detroit Lions made an intriguing pick that could immediately bolster their defense. Instead of sticking with their original selection of cornerback Terrion Arnold at 24th overall, the Lions opted for a different player—former Michigan Wolverines standout, Mike Sainristil.

As Eric Woodyard of ESPN explained, Sainristil's transition to the NFL makes perfect sense, especially after an All-American college career at Michigan. Not only is the move a natural fit for Sainristil, but it also addresses a critical need for Detroit: strengthening its secondary.
Sainristil's impact was undeniable during his rookie season. Leading all rookies with 62 solo tackles, he proved he could step up and make an immediate contribution. The Lions even got a taste of his potential during their divisional playoff game, showing just how much of an asset he could be.
While the Lions originally traded up to select Arnold, many believe Sainristil would have been the better fit, especially in hindsight. His performance, both in college and his first year in the NFL, could make him a key piece of the Lions' defense for years to come.
