The Detroit Lions have wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 1-2 mark and the regular season schedule is next. The NFL mandated cuts are now upon us, as each team must trim their rosters in order to get down to the 53 man limit. But there’s been one additional roster cut made that will surely have more than a few fans raising their eyebrows. Linebacker Jarrad Davis, who was selected by the Lions in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, was informed that he was among their cuts, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

The news was then confirmed by Detroit Free Press Lions beat writer Dave Birkett, who wrote the following:
“Lions are releasing LB Jarrad Davis per @RapSheet. He seemed expendable with the emergence of Malcolm Rodriguez, and given how good some of the Lions’ other LBs are on special teams. Known Campbell likes him, though, so had to be a tough one to make”

LB Jarrad Davis has been released by the Lions
Davis, who played collegiate football at Florida, had the 5th year option of his contract declined by Detroit in 2020, and he soon found a new home with the New York Jets. However, he decided to return to the franchise who drafted him.
In a total of 64 career NFL games, Davis has started 50 of them and totaled 324 tackles (216 solo), 10.5 sacks, one interception, nine pass defenses, seven forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. It looks like his second tenure with the Lions is over before it was able to officially begin, though we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see him once again rebound with another NFL franchise; we wish him the best of luck.
Among the cuts made by the Lions this afternoon include the likes of wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton as well as tight end Devin Funchess.
