The Detroit Lions can cross another veteran cornerback off their list.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rasul Douglas is expected to sign a one-year contract worth up to $3.8 million with the Washington Commanders, taking one of the more experienced remaining free-agent cornerbacks off the market.
Douglas was my personal favorite as a potential replacement after Detroit released former first-round pick Terrion Arnold. While the Lions never publicly expressed interest, his experience and proven production made him a logical fit for a team looking to add depth at cornerback.
The 30-year-old appeared in 15 games for the Miami Dolphins last season after joining the team following final roster cuts. He finished the year allowing 54 receptions for 515 yards and three touchdowns while recording 13 passes defended, tying the second-highest total of his career.
With Douglas now headed to Washington, Detroit’s options become even more limited if the front office decides to pursue outside help before training camp.
For now, the Lions appear poised to hold an open competition for the starting cornerback spot opposite D.J. Reed, with Rock Ya-Sin, Ennis Rakestraw, Roger McCreary, and rookie Keith Abney II among the leading candidates.
While Brad Holmes could still explore the trade market or remaining free agents, one of the most intriguing veteran options is officially off the board.
