Detroit Lions’ new quarterbacks coach raves about Matthew Stafford

When Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions‘ offense take the field in 2019, they will do so under a new offensive coordinator.

Following the 2018 season, the Lions fired Jim Bob Cooter and hired Darrell Bevell to take over as OC with the hope the offense will take big strides.

For that to happen, Stafford is going to have to be better than he was a year ago and according to new quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan, the Lions signal-caller still has all the tools to get the job done. Ryan noted that Stafford, despite going into his second decade in the NFL, still has an elite arm.

From Detroit Free Press:

“I never saw him up close early on in his career other than when we played them,” Ryan said this week. “But yeah, it’s still rare. I mean, in my opinion, like I said, he’s a very natural thrower of the ball. He can make every throw. So I would classify (his arm) as definitely still rare.”

“Watching him throw, to me, I’d describe it as effortless,” Ryan said. “He’s a natural passer of the football and he’s very accurate. All things I knew, but it’s even different when you see it live. So I’ve been very impressed with him.”

From the sounds of it, Ryan believes Stafford has the makeup to get the job done, let’s hope Bevell’s offense allows for that to happen.
