Did the Detroit Lions next offensive coordinator just become available?

Regardless of what Matthew Stafford may want, it is time for the Detroit Lions to move on from offensive coordinator, Jim Bob Cooter. Well, to be fair, the team should have moved on from Cooter a long time ago, but Lions GM Bob Quinn is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Instead, those in power made the decision to roll with Cooter for at least one more season and it has been a disaster. The offense has been predictable and Stafford has regressed.

There is no doubt about it that Cooter should be fired but doing so in the middle of the season seemed counterproductive considering more qualified candidates often emerge in the offseason.

But as fate has it, the Lions next offensive coordinator may have just been fired from his current position.

So, you are probably wondering who I am talking about.

That person is Kliff Kingsbury, who has reportedly been relieved as his head coaching duties at Texas Tech.

The former gunslinger has been the Red Raiders coach for the past six seasons, going 35-39 during that time. Prior to being hired at Texas Tech, Kingsbury spent the 2012 season as offensive coordinator for a Texas A&M team which featured Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

His coaching career started at Houston where he was co-offensive coordinator and was eventually responsible for calling the plays for the 2011 Cougars team that averaged over 48 points and nearly 600 yards of offense per game.

Kingsbury has a “tie” (we use that term lightly) to current Lions head coach Matt Patricia as he was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2003. Kingsbury did not play during his rookie season as he was on Injured Reserve and he was around Patricia for a brief amount of time as Patricia was hired by the Patriots as an offensive assistant prior to the 2004 season. On Sept. 6 of that season, Kingsbury was waived, so their time together was minimal.

As I said, it is time for Cooter to go. If the Lions are smart, they will kick the tires on Kingsbury before it it is too late.

What do you think, Nation? Would you be in favor of bringing on Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator?
