Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn had his duties essentially usurped by head coach Dan Campbell a number of weeks back, and many are speculating that it signaled the beginning of the end of his tenure with the team.
For Lynn, he’s simply trying to get through the remainder of the season, which is winding down, before looking ahead to what happens next in his career.
“You talk about next year, I’m just trying to get through the day,” Lynn said today. “I really focus on staying in the present and trying to help Dan Campbell and this offense as much as I can. And if I do that, next year will take care of itself. We’ll figure that out when the time comes.”
“I think we’re always evolving and things change. If the opportunity presented itself to try and help, but this is my opportunity right now. I can’t even think outside of this opportunity, so it’s best to stay in the present.
Lynn came to Detroit this past offseason after spending the past four years as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, and could be a candidate to fill a similar role on other teams should Detroit ultimately elect not to retain his services after this season ends.
“You’re doing everything but calling plays,” he said when asked how his duties have evolved. “You’re the coordinator. But, you’re just not calling it on game day. And some of the plays you do call. The head coach still asks for your advice on this and that,” Lynn said. “It’s different. It’s not the role that I came here for, but it’s still a role and we’re still trying to help the Lions win football games.”
