The Detroit Lions’ search for a new offensive coordinator is heating up, and unfortunately, it might be headed toward a frustrating ending.
On Tuesday, Detroit officially interviewed former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, a name that immediately jumped to the top of most fans’ wish lists. McDaniel’s creativity, offensive innovation, and proven ability to build quarterback-friendly systems make him an ideal fit to work alongside Dan Campbell and an offense loaded with weapons like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta.
The problem? The Lions aren’t the only ones who see McDaniel as a premium candidate.
According to ESPN insider Dan Graziano, McDaniel is expected to land a head coaching job, and Cleveland may be the team that scoops him up before Detroit ever gets a chance to finalize anything.
Graziano reports that the Browns are prioritizing an offensive-minded head coach and are open to keeping defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz in place. That setup could make McDaniel an especially attractive option. Despite Cleveland’s long-standing quarterback uncertainty, Graziano believes McDaniel’s track record of adapting schemes to fit his personnel, something he did in Miami with a constantly evolving QB situation, makes him a strong match for what the Browns are trying to build.
McDaniel’s blend of creativity, confidence, and willingness to think outside the box is exactly what the Lions are hoping to add to their staff. But with nine teams currently searching for head coaches, Detroit may simply be outgunned in the race. Head coaching opportunities don’t come around often, and if Cleveland (or another franchise) offers McDaniel the keys to the entire operation, it’s hard to imagine him turning that down for a coordinator role.
For the Lions, that means what looked like a dream pairing could end before it ever really begins. Detroit may have to pivot quickly to its next tier of candidates and prepare for the reality that their top target could be wearing a different headset next season.
