Detroit Lions pass on greatness in latest 2022 NFL Mock Draft

As it stands, the Detroit Lions hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and it seems like a no-brainer that if things stay the way they are, they will select EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux out of Oregon.

But in the latest 2022 NFL Mock Draft put out by James Fragoza of Pro Football Network, the Lions pass on greatness with the No. 1 overall pick to select a quarterback (Matt Corral) who lacks the arm strength to throw the deep ball.

Fragoza then has the Lions selecting WR John Metchie III with the No. 30 pick in the first round. (Note: The Lions currently would have the No. 28 pick in Round 1)

Here is what Fragoza has to say about the two picks.

1) Detroit Lions: Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss

An argument can be made that there isn’t a single quarterback worthy of the No. 1 overall pick currently. However, the Lions know Jared Goff is not the future. So why prolong their search for the face of the franchise? In this 2022 NFL Mock Draft, Matt Corral is the engine that will get Motor City humming.

His combination of athleticism, arm talent, and experience against top competition is unparalleled in this class. Corral has demonstrated a vast improvement in decision-making, throwing 2 interceptions thus far this season compared to 14 in 2020.

30) Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams): John Metchie III, WR, Alabama

The Lions have to give Corral another weapon to target outside of Amon-Ra St. Brown. John Metchie III didn’t record his first 100-plus-yard receiving game until Week 7, but he’s been consistent the last two years. Sure, he hasn’t blown up like DeVonta Smith, but that is more a testament to Smith’s abilities rather than a knock on Metchie. He possesses the speed to stretch defenses and the route running to create separation with ease.

Nation, would drafting Corral over Thibodeaux be a mistake by the Lions?
