The Detroit Lions had an opportunity to strengthen their playoff chances in Week 15… but instead, the path just got a whole lot tighter.
After falling to the Los Angeles Rams (11–3), the Lions dropped to 8–6, and the rest of Sunday’s results did Detroit no favors. The Bears (10–4) beat the Browns, the Seahawks (11–3) took care of the Colts, the 49ers (10–4) defeated the Titans, and the Eagles (9–5) knocked off the Raiders. The lone bright spot? The Packers (9–4–1) fell to the Broncos.
Heading into the day, the Lions’ ideal scenario was simple: win, and hope Chicago slipped. Instead, Detroit lost ground, and now their postseason margin for error is razor-thin.
How the Playoff Picture Works
Remember, the NFL playoff format is straightforward:
- Each division winner automatically makes the playoffs.
- Then, the top three remaining teams in each conference (based on record) qualify as wild card teams.
With so many NFC contenders winning in Week 15, the Lions are battling for one of those three wild-card spots, and that race is extremely crowded.
Detroit’s Updated Road Map to the Playoffs
1. The Lions must win their final three games.
Detroit no longer has room for slip-ups. The remaining schedule:
- vs. Steelers
- at Vikings
- at Bears
Winning out to reach 11–6 keeps Detroit in the thick of the wild card race.
2. Chicago needs to lose at least one of their next two games.
This is the biggest variable.
Before facing Detroit in Week 18, the Bears still play two more games (vs. the Packers and at the 49ers), and the Lions need Chicago to drop at least one of them if they want a chance to pass them in the final week of the season.
3. Wild card competition is now tougher.
With Philadelphia moving to 9–5, and both Seattle and San Francisco winning, the NFC wild card race is stacked with teams nine wins or better. Detroit has to keep pace with them — which circles back to one truth:
Win out or risk missing the postseason entirely.

The Lions had hopes of improving their position in Week 15, but instead, they watched the NFC tighten around them. Still, the season is far from over. At 8–6, Detroit is still alive, but the roadmap is clear:
Win the final three games and hope the Bears stumble.
