According to a report from Jordan Schultz, the Detroit Lions are releasing quarterback Hendon Hooker as part of their final roster cuts.
The move comes after a preseason in which Hooker struggled to find his footing. The 2023 third-round pick finished the preseason completing 22 of 40 passes for 187 yards, with no touchdowns, three interceptions, and two lost fumbles. While he showed flashes with his legs, including a 25-yard run against Houston, the offense failed to score a touchdown on any drive he led.
Head coach Dan Campbell had been candid about Hooker’s situation, noting over the weekend that the team would weigh the pros and cons of keeping a third quarterback. Campbell admitted he wished Hooker had “a little bit better outing,” but also emphasized that the young QB was working with third-string personnel.
Ultimately, the Lions chose to move forward with Jared Goff and Kyle Allen as their two quarterbacks. For Hooker, this decision may mark the end of his time in Detroit, though he could still land on another roster or practice squad given his draft pedigree and developmental upside.
Detroit, meanwhile, finalizes its 53-man roster with two quarterbacks and will shift its focus toward Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.
