PHOTOS: Detroit Lions release new jersey for 2017

After much anticipation, the new uniforms have arrived!  With President Rod Wood, General Manager Bob Quinn and Head Coach Jim Caldwell all present, the Detroit Lions released the new uniforms they'll be wearing for the 2017 NFL Season. The unveiling took place on Thursday night in front of 5,000 season ticket holders at Ford Field as part of the annual town hall question-and-answer event.

The Lions are the latest team to alter their uniforms after Nike took over the NFL's apparel contract in 2012. It was announced in early February of this year that the Lions had tweaked their logo, removing the black outline that surrounded it, as well as removing black completely from their color scheme. Additionally, a new font was selected as part of the re-branding.

“The updated logo and new typeface revealed online this morning are elements of a full rebranding which includes the removal of black from our brand identity,” the team issued statement read. “The rebrand will culminate with the unveiling of all-new uniforms on April 13. Throughout the rebranding process, we made it a priority to emphasize our classic color combination of Honolulu blue and silver, which has been synonymous with the Detroit Lions since 1934. We are confident that our fans will respond well to the changes.”

As the team previously stated, Honolulu Blue and silver are now the main emphases of the uniforms.

The Lions had been wearing the uniform and logo rebranding after the abysmal 2008 NFL season, during which they earned the dubious distinction of being the first NFL team to go 0-16 in the regular season. Several NFL teams have altered their look following Nike taking over the NFL apparel contract, including the Dolphins, Browns, Jaguars, Chargers, Vikings, Buccaneers, and Seahawks.

What do you think? Do you like the new version of the Lions uniforms? We're sure excited to see them in action in the fall!
