The Detroit Lions are parting ways with veteran wide receiver Tom Kennedy, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Kennedy, who has been with the organization since 2019, was released Monday as part of the team’s roster cuts.
Kennedy has been one of Dan Campbell’s most trusted depth receivers and special team contributors during his time in Detroit. While never a major factor in the passing game, he has consistently earned praise from coaches for his reliability and toughness. Over his career, Kennedy has appeared in 24 games, recording 14 catches for 195 yards.
The 29-year-old wideout saw action in four games during the 2024 season but did not register a catch. His most productive year came in 2022, when he hauled in 8 passes for 141 yards.
Despite being released, Kennedy may not be done in Detroit. Birkett notes that Kennedy is a strong candidate to return to the team via the practice squad, where his experience and work ethic could continue to provide value for the Lions.
