A week ago, a horrific tragedy took place at Oxford High School that left four students dead and seven others injured. One of those students was star athlete, Tate Myre, who wore No. 42 on the varsity football team.
On Sunday, prior to the Detroit Lions game against the Minnesota Vikings, Lions safety Jalen Elliott paid homage to Myre and the Oxford community by replacing ELLIOTT on his nameplate with MYRE for warmups.
Following the game, Elliott explained why he did what he did.
“I wanted to pay tribute to the family and pay homage to the community, with the family watching, hopefully,” said Elliott, who is from Richmond, Va., and went to Notre Dame. “I didn’t want to draw attention to myself. This was not only for Oxford, not only for Michigan, but for families across the country. I have three siblings. One is 16 and in high school now. My parents are both in education, in school systems. I want to support schools. Hopefully, we can come together and take a step in the right direction.”
Great gesture, Jalen!
Jalen Elliott paid tribute to Tate Myre, a 16-year old that was one of four killed in the Oxford High School shooting last Tuesday.
Elliott wore MYRE on his back nameplate on his jersey in pre-game, which like Myre is numbered 42.
