Detroit Lions fans can be excused for not thinking much of the team’s defense. After all, they’ve been consistently ranked at the bottom of the NFL for nearly all of this season.
But according to safety Tracy Walker, the defense is improving – even if the stats aren’t there to back it up.
“Honestly, each and every week we feel like we’re building confidence,” Walker said Thursday. “Like I say, we’re leaving things out there. I know the games haven’t been showing that we are getting better, but I feel like we are.
“We’re just going to try to go out there and compete. However the game turns out, that’s how it’s going to turn out. I can’t sit here and dictate the future and tell you what’s going to happen Sunday.”
The Lions will have their hands full on Sunday with the Tampa Bay Bucs and quarterback James Winston in town. Tampa Bay boasts the league’s second most potent offense, and that could spell disaster for Detroit. But Walker isn’t interested in what the stats say – only going out and giving his best effort.
“That number is all good and dandy,” Walker said. “But at the end of the day, we’re still got to go out there and execute our plays to make those plays. At the end of the day, Jameis is going to be trying to study us and trying to not throw those interceptions. And likewise we’re trying to make them.”
