Detroit Lions select Matthew Stafford’s potential replacement in latest 3-round mock draft

Let me begin by saying that I believe Matthew Stafford will have an awesome 2020 season and that he will eventually end up getting a contract extension and retiring as a member of the Detroit Lions.

That being said, if Stafford were to suffer another injury or have a down season, I would understand if the organization started to plan to have a new quarterback when his contract is up.

According to the latest 2021 mock draft published on Touchdown Wire, Luke Easterling has the Lions selecting a potential replacement for Stafford in the third round (No. 73 overall).

That quarterback is Georgia signal-caller, Jamie Newman.

Newman, who recently transferred to Georgia after spending his first three seasons at Wake Forest, completed 60.9% of his passes for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns to go along with 11 interceptions in 2019.

Here is what a scouting report from The Draft Network has to say about Newman:

Pros: Jamie aligns at QB for the Bulldogs. He is a graduate transfer from Wake Forest. Jamie is a good athlete with good mobility in and out of the pocket. In the run game Jamie is good. He is a threat to get first downs with his legs if the play breaks down. He also demonstrates physical toughness and determination as a runner with the football. In the passing game, he is sufficient. He will hang tough in the pocket when it collapses and has sufficient arm strength. He’s much more consistent in the short to intermediate range in terms of accuracy and completions. He demonstrates leadership and earned critical first downs with the game on the line late in the 2019 Duke game.

Cons: Although his completion percentage and YPA were respectable, he is not a very accurate passer. He’s rather inconsistent, especially with regards to deep balls. May be due to his lack of consistent mechanics and footwork. His accuracy while under duress was average. He forces the ball to his primary receiver even when he’s covered well. They’re clearly an offense who runs the football to set up the pass, and never appeared to trust his arm with the football in critical parts of the game. Mainly using runs and safe throws underneath
