Why the Detroit Lions could sign more free agents beginning today

At 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, the second wave of NFL free agency will get underway.

What is the second wave of NFL free agency, you ask?

To put it simply, any free agent players signed after 4 p.m. on Tuesday will not count in the NFL's calculation for determining compensatory picks.

“If teams sign players, they are not counted against the compensatory pick formula,” Ian Rapoport said Monday night on Total Access. “In other words, they do not hurt future draft choices. So, you have some players that are simply in a waiting game.”

Though there is not a ton of talent left, you can bet Detroit Lions‘ GM Bob Quinn will be looking closely to see if there is a player or two he could get at the right price to improve the Lions' roster.

Some of the top free agents still available include DL Ndamukong Suh, DE Ezekiel Ansah, CB Morris Claiborne, LB Jamie Collins, and WR Michael Crabtree.
