TE Derrick Deese Jr. signs with Detroit Lions

According to reports, the Detroit Lions have signed former San Jose State TE Derrick Deese Jr. as an undrafted rookie free agent.

From Dane Brugler:

Derrick Deese Jr. attended John F. Kennedy High in La Palma where he was a two-time All-League wide receiver. He spent two years at Golden West College before transferring to San Jose State, where he moved to tight end. His production improved each season and led the team in receiving as a senior while also grading well as a blocker. His father (Derrick) played 14 seasons in the NFL and started at right guard for the San Francisco 49ers’ victory in Super Bowl 29. Deese is a physical pass-catcher who can work the middle of the field and attack the football outside his frame. However, his routes and separating ability are lacking, leading to a ton of contested windows. As a blocker, his technique needs work, but his body control and grit help him stay connected. Overall, Deese’s mediocre athleticism might leave him undrafted, but his coordination and length show as both a blocker and pass-catcher, which will help him compete for an NFL roster spot.
