During his coaching career, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has coached some outstanding safeties including Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, and the great Troy Polamalu.

So, it really caught my attention on Wednesday when Carroll said that newly acquired Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs reminds him of some of the great safeties he has coached.

Diggs, of course, was traded to Seattle earlier in the year from the Detroit Lions for a 5th and 7th round draft pick.

When the news broke that the Lions were trading their starting safety/team captain for picks that likely will never pan out, Lions fans and Diggs former teammates were not happy at all. In fact, Diggs’ partner in crime while he was with the Lions, Darius Slay, was flat-out pissed.

Though Diggs had not been playing well for the Lions, it was still a shock to the fan base and the locker room that general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia could just let Diggs go for a bag of balls.

Since arriving in Seattle, Diggs has been nothing short of amazing. In fact, in five games since being traded, Diggs has 3 interceptions (one returned for a TD), 21 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

For his efforts with the Seahawks, Diggs has been named as an alternate for the Pro Bowl.

When all is said and done, will Diggs be mentioned in the same breath as Thomas (3-time All-Pro), Chancellor (3 Pro Bowls), and Polamalu (4-time All-Pro)?

Personally I have big doubts that Diggs will ever be in that conversation, but he is certainly worth much more than a 5th and 7th round draft pick and he is proving that already.

Nation, “did the Detroit Lions trade ‘Troy Polamalu’ for a bag of balls?”
